Friedrichsweiher green space to be renovated

The city of Offenbach would like to renovate the Friedrichsweiher park. The resolution to do so was passed by the city councillors back in 2021. The city has discussed the specific design with citizens.

Public participation completed

There is already a redevelopment concept for the redesign, which sets out basic redevelopment goals for three construction phases/areas. From September to November 2022, residents were able to submit their wishes and suggestions for the specific design at various events and online.

The Office for Planning and Construction, Open Space Planning and Urban Greenery Department is planning to renovate the Friedrichsweiher public green space, including the pond and playground. There is also a football pitch in the park, which has already been renovated and is in good condition.
The costs will be co-financed via the "Growth and Sustainable Renewal" funding program (formerly Zukunft Stadtgrün).

The three renovation areas are:

1. northern area with playground:

  • Create attractive access / entrance at the Senefelderstraße / Friedrichsring junction.
  • The playground will be reorganized and divided into play zones for children and young people of different ages. The area with the existing net pyramid, which will remain as the only play equipment, will become the play zone for children aged 5 to 14 and will be equipped with additional play equipment. A separate play area with attractive play and exercise facilities will be created for children aged 0 to 4.
  • A recreation area / promenade will be created to the north of the pond.
  • Construction of a wooden bank terrace: A new wooden deck on the northern bank of the pond will invite visitors to linger and experience the element of water.

2. southern area:

  • The quiet zones will be restructured with the aim of improving the quality of the area and its recreational function.
  • A boules facility will be integrated.
  • New green spaces will be created to increase the diversity of animal and plant species. Insect-friendly plants that bloom all year round are planned.

3. pond renovation:

  • The pond is desilted.
  • The historic eastern bank border made of natural stone will be restored.
  • The western bank area, which is currently paved with cobblestones, will be restored to its natural state. A regeneration and filter zone with reeds will be created to permanently improve the water quality of the pond.

The Friedrichsweiher park is an important open space with a local recreational function for local residents. It should become a place for recreation, exercise and socializing. The redevelopment of the green space also has a significant climate impact and biodiversity function, as the green and water areas have a cooling effect on the surrounding urban districts and provide a habitat for native animal and plant species.
