City council sets course for the future of the Hospitalstrasse parking lot
15.05.2024
To make the city center greener and provide a refuge for hot days, a public green space is to be created on the current parking lot between Hospitalstrasse and Geleitsstrasse. To ensure that there are still parking spaces in the area, a neighborhood garage is to be built. The municipal council already approved the project on May 8. The city councillors are expected to vote on it at their June meeting.
"The idea of rearranging the parking spaces in this heavily sealed inner block area and thus creating an open space already existed in the 1990s during a redevelopment process," reports Paul-Gerhard Weiß, Head of Planning. "The integrated development concept of the current urban development program 'Social cohesion southern inner city' took up these plans again in 2017. The reason for this is that the area of around 5,900 square meters is one of the last remaining open space potentials in Offenbach's city centre."
As parking pressure in the southern part of the city center remains high, parking spaces should continue to be available in a parking deck, primarily for residents. OPG Offenbacher Projektentwicklungsgesellschaft mbH has already positively examined the fundamental feasibility of this in a feasibility study. OPG will now further develop these plans.
The reorganization of the parking spaces will create space for the development of a green area of around 3,500 square metres. It is intended to help improve the microclimatic situation of the surrounding area and provide a place for recreation and meeting in the middle of the city in future.
