Reconstruction of the Kaiserlei traffic circle
Initial situation and vision
With the reconstruction of the Kaiserlei junction, Offenbach has successfully completed one of its largest infrastructure projects of recent decades. Where previously an overloaded traffic circle determined the flow of traffic, a modern, traffic light-controlled double intersection now ensures clarity and safety. A new intersection has optimized the separation of traffic to and from the freeway and between Offenbach and Frankfurt via the Kaiserleipromenade. The project not only fundamentally improved the traffic situation, but also laid the foundation for the urban development of the entire area.
For years, the Kaiserlei junction was one of the most problematic traffic points in the Rhine-Main region. More than 70,000 vehicles used the junction between Offenbach and Frankfurt every day. The old traffic circle was increasingly reaching the limits of its capacity. Traffic jams, unclear traffic routing and limited crossing options for cyclists and pedestrians led to the decision to rebuild it. Finally, in January 2015, the city presented its plans for the conversion to the public for the first time and presented impressive visualizations. The city's vision was to create a clear, orderly intersection structure that better distributes traffic, opens up space for pedestrians and cyclists and enhances Offenbach's south-western city gateway.
Grant notification from the state of Hesse
In June 2016, Hesse's Transport Minister Tarek Al-Wazir handed over a funding decision for 15.6 million euros to Lord Mayor Horst Schneider, thereby securing a large part of the funding. This was a decisive step towards implementation, which also secured the project politically. Numerous underground pipes, contaminated soil and additional requirements such as flood protection measures made the work more difficult than originally anticipated. Added to this were construction price increases and pandemic-related supply bottlenecks. Despite these hurdles, the goal always remained clear: an efficient, safe and future-oriented transport solution. Then, finally, on February 20, 2017: the ground-breaking ceremony. The conversion was carried out in several construction phases while traffic continued to flow. Temporary lanes, detour and detailed traffic management kept the junction operational throughout the construction period. Visible milestones included the removal of the last remnants of the old traffic circle, the construction of new lanes and the installation of modern traffic lights.
In March 2018, Lord Mayor Felix Schwenke then presented the overarching Kaiserlei project, which went far beyond road construction. With it, the focus shifted to upgrading the entire neighborhood. From the outset, the city saw the conversion not just as a transport infrastructure measure, but as part of a more comprehensive urban development project. New office and commercial space, modern green spaces and an attractive Kaiserlei promenade were to complete the picture. The Kaiserlei has established itself as a high-quality location for renowned companies with excellent transport links. Today, 181 newly planted trees, around 18,000 square meters of green spaces and an elaborately designed city entrance are also part of the result. Footpaths and cycle paths are wider, safer and better connected. In February 2021, the last remnant of the old traffic circle was removed - a defining moment that marked the end of an era. Not only has mobility been significantly improved, but also the quality of life in this area.
Completion of Kaiserlei traffic circle conversion
Completion at the end of 2022 marked the conclusion of a project that was originally estimated at 37 million euros and ultimately cost over 67 million euros. In December 2022, the city officially opened the new double intersection.
Despite the delays and additional costs, the conversion is considered a decisive step in Offenbach's development. The new double intersection is efficient, clearly laid out and offers a clear structure for all road users. Today, the Kaiserlei junction symbolizes the transformation of the city: from a pure traffic structure to a modern, green and urban gateway. It not only connects Offenbach and Frankfurt in terms of traffic, but also forms the framework for the future development of an important district.
