Final work on the market square underway
23.06.2023
The remaining work on the redesign of the market square is making progress. For the first time, the redesigned square could be experienced again during Offenbach Week without major barriers and used as a new event area. During the construction period, a great deal of effort was put into the underground infrastructure: Water, electricity and telecom lines as well as the house connections there were extensively expanded and modernized. A tree bed with a volume of around 140 cubic meters was created for the trees according to the Stockholm model in order to reduce the amount of irrigation required and, above all, to prevent rainwater from being fed into the sewage system. Two urban climate-compatible trees (string trees) were planted with an initial height of five to seven meters, which grow rapidly when young to provide shade quickly - they then grow much more slowly as they get older and provide food for insects during flowering as a bee food tree.
The new design elements include the canopy stop, which was planted at the end of May, new benches and the reinstallation of the Otto Gassenmeyer fountain, which is illuminated in the evening and was also put into operation this week. Technicians from the construction company had initially swapped two cables, which is why the fountain could not yet bubble during Offenbach Week. Additional seating will soon be installed around the fountain and the remaining litter bins that were removed during the construction period will be reinstalled. At the end of June / beginning of July, the perennials will also be planted in the inner areas of the bench groups and the drinking water fountain can go into operation.
