Main dyke expansion in the city center: Mainufer parking lot free again by the end of the week
02.12.2025
The tree felling on the Main dyke has largely been completed. This means that there are no restrictions for drivers on Mainstrasse for the time being. The footpath on the Main dyke is open again. The footpath and cycle path on the banks of the Main are also open to traffic again. The felling was necessary in order to be able to start the expansion of the flood protection next year. The aim is to better protect the city center from the risk of flooding. As extreme weather events tend to increase, the Main dyke is to be able to withstand river levels that statistically only occur every 200 years.
By setting up a storage area for the work, parking spaces on the Mainufer parking lot have been eliminated. These should be usable again by the end of the week. Work in the embankment area to the east of Friedhofstrasse will follow at the end of the year. The cycle path will have to be diverted for this. The city will provide information before this work begins.
Background
The expansion of the Main dyke is one of the last major steps in flood protection in Offenbach. Following the completion of the sections in Rumpenheim in 2024, the focus is now on the city center, the final section. The aim is to raise the dyke to a height that can effectively prevent even extreme flooding, which statistically can occur every 200 years. The flood protection project currently costs 38.5 million euros, with the state of Hesse currently funding the implementation with 13 million euros. The cost increases since 2019 are the result of extensive rescheduling and higher construction costs.
