Woodland work on the Main dyke in Rumpenheim and Bürgel
28.10.2022
From November, the Darmstadt Regional Council will begin clearing trees and shrubs from the legal protection strip of the Main dyke in Rumpenheim and Bürgel. The dyke crown path could be temporarily closed during this work. Appropriate signage and detour for cyclists and pedestrians will be set up as required. The public is asked to observe the signs, show consideration for the work and use detour. The work will take around four weeks. Due to the unpredictable weather conditions, it is not possible to give a more precise time frame for completion.
Mayor and Head of the Climate Department Sabine Groß explains: "The Main dyke is a technical engineering structure that requires regular maintenance work. Without these measures, the functional safety of the dyke is limited in the event of flooding." Roots within the protective strip can lead to damage to the dyke. The measure serves to ensure the function of the dyke as a flood protection facility.
The woodland work was already coordinated with the city of Offenbach and the nature conservation and forestry authorities in spring 2022 and will be carried out by the Biebesheim dyke maintenance department of the "IV/Da 41.6 State Hydraulic Engineering" department of the Darmstadt Regional Council. The breeding and setting season will be taken into account.
