"Learning German" - website expanded with information for children and young people
07.01.2019 – The "Learning German in Offenbach" website designed last year for the City of Offenbach's website has been expanded to include useful information for the target group of children and young people.
On the topic page "Learning German in Offenbach", multipliers and parents who already understand a little German can find information on how newly immigrated children and young people can be supported in language acquisition from kindergarten to vocational school in Offenbach.
"Mastering the German language has a decisive influence on success at school and at work and is therefore a prerequisite for successful integration. It is therefore important to support newly immigrated children and young people in learning German right from the start," says Paul-Gerhard Weiß, Head of Education.
Overview of a wide range of offers
The website provides information on language support in daycare centers and schools as well as on the activities of the municipal children's library and the self-learning center at the adult education center. Low-threshold German courses offered by the Youth Migration Service are also presented, as well as the Offenbach "DeutschSommer" language project for third and fourth graders and the "Diesterweg Scholarship", a program that supports children and their parents. There are also references to internet platforms and apps that help newcomers to practise or consolidate what they have learned at home.
"Many educational stakeholders wanted to bundle their offers in one place and make them transparent. The website shows how diverse the efforts in the city of Offenbach are to support new immigrants, whether young or old, with language acquisition," explains Gabriele Botte, Head of the Offenbach Adult Education Center.
The website was designed by the education coordinator for new immigrants, Nadira Korkor. Her position is based at the Adult Education Center/Education Coordination and Advice Office and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research until November 30, 2020.
