Humboldt School: Together for more safety on the way to school
15.08.2025
At the start of the new school year, the focus is once again on road safety around Offenbach's schools. Children are among the most vulnerable road users. For road traffic, this means increased consideration. Primary school children in particular - especially those starting school - face special challenges on their way to school.
In order to further improve safety around the Humboldt School, Mayor and Head of Mobility Sabine Groß discussed the traffic situation at the school with parents' representatives, the school management, the city parents' council and the Office for Mobility. "It is important to me that everyone can get around Offenbach quickly and safely. Routes to school are of particular importance to me. I would like to thank the committed parents, the school management and also the parents' council for the objective and constructive joint development of ideas for more safety at Humboldt School," said Groß.
Several of the measures discussed have already been implemented. For example, yellow indicators have been installed at the Humboldtstraße and Waldstraße traffic lights. These increase visibility and make turning drivers aware of crossing pedestrians.
In addition, a smiley sign at the school reminds drivers to be particularly careful near the school and calls on them to keep to the speed limit. Ground markings with "Attention children" are also intended to draw attention to the schoolchildren in Humboldtstraße.
In addition, bollards have been installed on the sidewalk in front of the school entrance. These prevent parent cabs from blocking the sidewalk.
The greenery on the corner of Humboldtstraße and Schopenhauer Straße was also cut back. This has reduced the risk of accidents by improving the visibility of pupils.
"We are pleased that many concrete measures have already been implemented," says principal Hafize Sucu. Guiseppina Gerwien, Chairwoman of the School Parents' Council, also sees progress: "Road safety for the children has increased significantly. If there were a 30 km/h speed limit near the school on Waldstraße, safety for our children could be increased even further - we would therefore very much like to see this happen."
Mayor Sabine Groß supports an examination of this request: "If the school wants this, I support it. The introduction of a 30 km/h speed limit would further improve road safety around the school."
In conclusion, Mayor Groß emphasizes: "Safe routes to school are a central goal of our mobility policy. The measures at the Humboldt School show how concrete improvements can be achieved through joint action on the ground."
