City of Offenbach

Art college with university status

The Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) in Offenbach can look back on almost 190 years of development. Founded in 1832 as a "craftsmen's school" to improve the training of the next generation of craftsmen, it soon became an "arts and crafts school" in which crafts, artistic and theoretical subjects were taught simultaneously. In 1970, the "Offenbacher Werkkunstschule" was transformed into an artistic and scientific university of the state of Hesse, which today enjoys an international reputation.

In line with its statutory educational mandate, the HfG Offenbach's activities today include artistic and academic teaching and research in the diverse fields of visual communication and product design, with particular emphasis on electronic media and the latest technologies.

The university is characterized by great openness: Art, media and design are taught and developed together on an equal footing. Theory and design work together here, as do experiment and product or new and old image creation techniques.

The promotion of communicative intelligence is just as much a goal as the development of emotional and sensual maturity. The reality in art, design and media is characterized by cross-media and cross-cultural convergences. This is reflected in the educational structures of the HfG: it aims to train artists and designers who are able to meet the demands of a constantly changing landscape of professional profiles.

There are two subject areas to choose from when graduating with a degree in design.

Multiple awards

Around 600 students currently take advantage of the courses offered by the departments. The course is divided into a four-semester foundation course and a four-semester advanced course, followed by the diploma thesis.

The annual "Rundgang" offers an insight into the students' current work. Since April 2010, the HfG has been offering graduates from the fields of art, design, media or related sciences the opportunity to complete a doctorate (Dr. phil.) according to a model that combines science with art or design.

The university also repeatedly demonstrates its competitiveness in the private sector. Numerous student projects and competition submissions have been awarded internationally renowned prizes and recognitions. Cooperation with business, culture, the sciences and public institutions connects the Offenbach University of Art and Design with the diverse life in the Rhine-Main region.
