No animals for Christmas

13.12.2023

For many people, Christmas is the season of presents. There are many nice gifts to surprise someone. Animals as gifts are not one of them. Animals cannot be exchanged or returned if you don't like them.

The veterinary office of the city of Offenbach is responsible for animal protection. It says: "Animals are not things that can be given as gifts, but living beings with needs."

Buying an animal should be well thought out and prepared. There are many things to consider. Pet owners are responsible for the animal and for its well-being. That's why everyone has to decide for themselves whether they want an animal. No one should be surprised with an animal.

Future pet owners should consider the following before taking in an animal:

Good husbandry: some animals such as rabbits or birds need to live with other conspecifics. So, with another rabbit or bird. Other animals such as dogs need to go out several times a day.

Costs: Food, visits to the vet and pet insurance cost money every month.

Responsibility: It must be clear who will look after the animal.

Allergies: You should know whether a family member has an allergy to animals.

Time: You need to consider whether you have enough time for an animal. This is not the case if you are away a lot or travel frequently. Or if you have a hobby that requires a lot of time.

Animal welfare: You should only buy animals from legal breeders or from animal shelters. There are also people who sell animals privately. You should be careful here. And check carefully whether the animals are being kept well.

If you think things through carefully, you can take on an animal with a clear conscience. But it doesn't have to be a Christmas present.
