Batteries and rechargeable batteries are found in many devices that we use every day. A rechargeable battery is a battery that can be charged with electricity. Batteries and rechargeable batteries are found in cell phones, laptops, e-cigarettes, e-bikes and cameras, for example. Normally, batteries and rechargeable batteries are very safe. However, batteries and rechargeable batteries can sometimes be dangerous. It is therefore important to use them correctly.
Batteries and rechargeable batteries contain good and toxic substances. The good substances are metals such as copper and aluminum. These metals can be used to make new things. The toxic substances are very bad for the environment. When a battery is old and broken, the toxic substances can flow out. In this case, the battery should only be handled with gloves.
Batteries can burn if they are broken or become too hot, for example.
This happens when there is a short circuit in the battery. A short circuit means that too much current is flowing. Batteries and rechargeable batteries must not be disposed of in the normal waste garbage can. Batteries and rechargeable batteries are special waste. You can hand them in at various locations. For example, at the recycling center in Dieselstraße, in supermarkets or DIY stores. There are special boxes for batteries and rechargeable batteries.
There are very powerful rechargeable batteries called lithium-ion batteries. They can burn even faster. Before throwing them away, you should tape the terminals with adhesive tape. Terminals are the two ends of rechargeable batteries.
How do you store batteries and rechargeable batteries at home? They should be stored in a cool, dry place. And not together with metals, such as keys or coins. Direct sunlight or heat are not good. Heat can cause batteries to burn. There are special bags that cannot burn. You can store the batteries there. These bags can be bought in DIY stores.
A battery should only be charged with the correct charger. And do not charge for too long or all night. Too much charging can be dangerous, as batteries become hot. If you do not use a device for a long time, you should remove the batteries from the device. Batteries should only be charged when you are at home.
