Incorrectly filled organic waste garbage cans are no longer emptied

07.12.2024

The yellow label shows that the wrong waste is in the organic waste garbage can.

Only organic waste belongs in the organic waste garbage can. This includes, for example, leftover food, bread, fruit or garden waste. Plastic and cigarettes do not belong in the organic waste garbage can. Organic waste can be turned into gas, fertilizer or compost. Farmers use fertilizer for their fields. If there are plastic residues or cigarettes in the fertilizer or compost, this is harmful. The farmers can then not use the fertilizer.

Plastic organic compost bags are also a problem. They are not allowed in the organic waste garbage can. These bags do not disintegrate well and plastic waste ends up in the environment.

Unfortunately, too many people in Offenbach are still throwing the wrong things into the organic waste garbage can. Since the summer, the refuse collection service has been checking the organic waste garbage cans before taking the waste away. The refuse collection service has put a sticker on incorrectly filled organic waste garbage cans. The sticker shows with pictures what is allowed in the organic waste garbage can. The waste collection service has also attached yellow labels to the garbage cans. They show which waste is not allowed in the organic waste garbage can. Some garbage cans had up to ten yellow labels. The refuse collection staff also spoke to people. They explained to them what is allowed in the organic waste garbage can. Many people learned from this and changed their behavior.

A few months have passed since then. Since November 1, the refuse collectors have stopped emptying garbage cans that are repeatedly filled incorrectly. They are given a red notice. People then have to decide: They take the wrong waste out of the garbage can or they pay for the waste collection service to empty the organic waste garbage can. Because the wrong waste in the organic waste bin can only be incinerated as residual waste. And it is more expensive to dispose of residual waste than organic waste.
