Violence against women

13.07.2024

No one may inflict violence on another person. Violence is forbidden. Even in a marriage, partnership or family. Women and girls experience violence more often than boys and men. This is why we speak of gender-specific violence. Gender-specific means: women and girls experience violence because they are women and girls.

There are different types of violence: Domestic violence: This is violence that happens in the family, marriage or partnership, for example.

Violence is, for example, when people are physically harmed. Examples: a person is beaten, tied up or not given anything to eat. People are hurt emotionally. Examples: a person is insulted or abused. Someone is forced to do something they do not want to do. This can also be violence. Examples: Forbidding contact with friends or family, controlling contact or locking up.

If women experience violence and need help, they can contact the association "Frauen helfen Frauen": Telephone number 069 816557, e-mail: beratungfrauenhaus-offenbachde

There is also sexual violence. This means, for example, that a woman is touched, fondled or kissed. But the woman does not want this. Or she is forced to have sex.

Sexual violence can happen anywhere: At home, at work, on the street or on the internet. Anyone can be affected. Women are particularly often victims of sexual violence. A person is never to blame for domestic or sexual violence. Victims of sexual violence can get help here: Pro Familia's women's helpline, telephone number: 069 85096800 or 069 850968022.

There is also a help telephone in Germany. The telephone number is 116 016. A girl or woman can always call here if she is afraid. For example: If someone is hurting her or wants to hurt her. The help phone is always available, even at night. Even at weekends and on public holidays. Help doesn't cost any money and you don't have to give your name. The counselors know their way around and are there to help.

In emergencies, you can always call the police on 110.
