City of Offenbach

The Main embankment in the city center is being extended

20.12.2025

This is what it should look like at Herrnstrasse with a staircase and ramp on the Main.

The Main dyke in Offenbach's city center is being extended. A dyke is a protection against high water. It is called the Main dyke because Offenbach lies on the River Main. The new dyke is intended to better protect people in the city center from flooding. It is designed to prevent water from running into the city. When it rains heavily for many days, the Main has a lot of water. This is known as high water. The water can then reach the houses. Flooding can occur. There will be more frequent floods in the future. This is due to climate change. Climate change means that the earth's climate is changing. There will be more heavy rainfall, storms and floods.

The dyke is now not high enough to safely hold back a large flood. That is why the extension is very important. It is very expensive to build the new dyke. The construction costs more money than expected. Nevertheless, it is cheaper to build a dyke than to repair damage caused by flooding.

Construction of the Main dyke in the city center will begin in spring 2026 and take more than two years.

In November, 190 trees were felled so that the new dyke can be built. Around 120 of the trees were on the dyke path. Other trees were felled near the cemetery road. It's a shame that the trees had to be felled. But otherwise it is not possible to work there. There is not enough space. When the Main embankment is finished, new trees will be planted. There will be more trees than before.

During the construction period, Main-Straße will become a large construction site. Main-Straße is an important road for traffic from Bürgel and Rumpenheim towards the city center. For this reason, Main-Straße will not be completely closed. Nevertheless, there will be restrictions for cars and bicycles. More detailed information on traffic will be published on the website www.offenbach.de/maindeich.

The extension of the Main dyke in the city center is the last major step in flood protection in Offenbach. Dykes in Bürgel and Rumpenheim have already been renewed.

Citizens were able to participate in the planning for the Main dyke back in 2011. Many ideas and wishes were taken on board. The city is also using the construction to make the area along the Main more attractive. The new dyke should also be a place where people enjoy spending time.
