A study has investigated how many people use which means of transportation. The study is called "Mobility in Germany 2023". It shows how many people travel by car, bus, train or bicycle. And how many people walk. The study is carried out regularly. So you can see changes.
The results for Offenbach are good. More and more people in Offenbach are walking, cycling or using public transport. That's good for the environment.
Many people in Offenbach like to walk. 33 out of 100 journeys (33 percent) are made on foot in Offenbach. In the last study in 2017, the figure was 26 percent. 15 out of 100 journeys (15 percent) are made by bicycle in Offenbach. In 2017, it was 11 percent. 20 out of 100 journeys (20 percent) are made by bus and train in Offenbach. In 2017 it was 16 percent. 32 out of 100 journeys (32 percent) are made by car in Offenbach. In 2017, it was 46 percent.
Sabine Groß is the mayor of Offenbach. She is pleased about the positive change and says: "Many people are using climate-friendly means of transportation. That is a good thing. Because then there is less noise in the city and the air is cleaner. People also move around more, which is good for their health.
This also has a positive effect on the so-called CO2 footprint. The CO2 footprint shows how much CO2 is produced by people's activities. CO2 is the abbreviation for carbon dioxide. This is a gas. Too much CO2 damages the environment. In Germany, the CO2 footprint for commuting is large: 5.1 kilos of CO2 per person per day. In Offenbach, the CO2 footprint for commuting is smaller: only 3.5 kilos of CO2 per person per day. A small CO2 footprint is good for the environment.
The city of Offenbach supports this environmentally friendly development by providing better cycle paths. The Deutschlandticket is also having a positive effect.
The study "Mobility in Germany 2023" was conducted by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs.
