Introduction of digital residence registration in Offenbach
01.08.2024
From today, Offenbach residents can register their apartment completely online after moving house - without having to go to the citizens' office and including changes to their ID card. "I am very pleased that the Offenbach Citizens' Office has tested this new and convenient service in cooperation with other Hessian cities and can now offer it," says Martin Wilhelm, City Treasurer and the department head responsible for the Citizens' Office.
Residents can now conveniently update their new address from home after moving house and thus fulfill their registration obligation digitally. The required confirmation from the landlord is uploaded (a scan or photo is sufficient here), the address sticker for the ID card is sent by post and the chip in the ID card is updated using the ID card app 2.0. This eliminates the need to go to the office.
"In the first half of 2024, a total of around 8,500 registrations and re-registrations were carried out at the Citizens' Office, 1,600 of them online via our old system, which still required a visit to the Citizens' Office to change the ID card. We expect a significant increase in the online rate through the complete digitalization of this service," says Markus Eck, Deputy Head of the Offenbach Citizens' Office. "Downloading the AusweisApp 2.0 and setting up the federal service account is straightforward, can be done in just a few minutes and enables the use of a constantly growing number of online services - so it's definitely worth the effort," says Eck, encouraging people to create the necessary conditions.
The digital residence registration is a service developed by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg as part of the implementation of the Online Access Act (OZG) in accordance with the "One for All" principle (EfA). The introduction and use of the service is financially supported by the state of Hesse. The service is to be gradually rolled out nationwide.
The Hessian cities of Frankfurt am Main, Wiesbaden, Kassel, Darmstadt, Offenbach am Main, Hanau, Gießen, Fulda and Rüsselsheim am Main have tested the service as pilot municipalities on behalf of Hessian cities and municipalities that will introduce it at a later date and are now introducing it. This means that digital residence registration will soon be available to more than 1.8 million residents in Hesse.
"My special thanks go to Franziska Reinig, Andreas Leonhardt and Alexander Witzel from the Citizens' Office team, who were instrumental in the success of the pilot project for Offenbach," says Martin Wilhelm.
