Trial training and games provided an insight into the sport of "walking soccer"

10.05.2024

The soccer players successfully completed their first trial training session in walking soccer.

For senior citizens who would like to play soccer but are no longer able to run so well, the new sport of "walking soccer", which is recognized by the world football association FIFA, may be an option. Members of the Italsud soccer club recently met for a trial session. The club's chairman, Carmelo Manoti, together with Juliane Timmerberg, Coordination Office for Open Senior Citizens' Work, and Luigi Masala, Integration Officer for the City of Offenbach, had invited them to get to know the special features and benefits of the sport. Werner Abraham and Rainer Held from the Hessian Football Association explained the rules and basic features of the game and, after a warm-up phase, whistled the test kick.

Timmerberg had been looking for a partner for a long time and found one at Italsud. "We have a number of people in Offenbach who would like to take part in sport in their old age and who can't find any suitable activities. Walking soccer can be a suitable alternative here." A total of 14 people from the club's community came to the sports ground on Mühlheimer Straße to try out the sport. The former footballers initially found it difficult to adhere to the rules, which prohibit running, high balls and playing with the head, among other things. In addition, there is no goalkeeper in walking soccer - the participants also had to get used to this at first. The goal, which is much lower and narrower, must be defended by the six players of a team. Attacking players are not allowed to enter the semi-circular zone around the opponent's goal. The game lasts a total of four times 15 minutes and demands a lot from the players. Everyone gratefully reached for the drinks provided by the club.

After the first trial training session, the club will consider whether it wants to develop the offer for Offenbach. After all, this requires a great deal of organizational work. Timmerberg pledged her support and continues to promote the sport, which will probably soon be recognized as a health sport.
