New state funding strengthens civic engagement

08.07.2025 – The state of Hesse has published the new funding guideline "#deinehrenamt". This guideline provides non-profit organizations, associations and initiatives in Hesse with new opportunities to implement their important projects and receive financial support for them.

"Voluntary work is not only help and support in various areas, but also an important part of our democratic culture. With the new funding guideline, the state of Hesse is creating good conditions to promote this commitment in a simpler and more targeted manner. This is a clear signal of appreciation for the countless hours that our citizens invest in the common good," explains Lord Mayor Dr. Felix Schwenke.

Charitable organizations such as clubs, foundations, volunteer agencies and associations, local authorities and, for the first time, private initiatives are eligible to apply, provided they pursue charitable goals. The funding amount is up to 30,000 euros per project. For larger funding amounts of 5,000 euros or more, a personal contribution of at least ten percent is required.

Funding is provided for a wide range of measures relating to volunteering. These include projects to recruit and support volunteers. Association anniversaries and recognition events - such as volunteer parties or "thank you evenings" - can also be supported. Digital projects that have an external impact, such as setting up a website or a social media channel, are also eligible for funding. Support is also available for projects aimed at reaching new target groups, developing modern and sustainable structures or reducing bureaucratic hurdles.

One of the most important innovations is the significant simplification of the application and verification procedure: projects can start immediately after submitting the application, but should be submitted at least eight weeks before the project begins. For funding amounts of up to 1,000 euros, a simple confirmation of receipt is sufficient - a detailed proof of use is no longer required. This regulation is intended to significantly reduce the burden on smaller associations and initiatives in particular.

"I very much welcome the fact that the administrative burden for volunteers will actually be kept relatively low, at least for small amounts of funding. This is real progress for all those who are committed to their fellow human beings and our living environment. I therefore encourage all volunteers and associations in our city to take advantage of this opportunity and get their ideas off the ground," Schwenke concluded.

The application period begins on February 15 and ends on November 15 of the respective calendar year.
