Written in simple language: Information on volunteering
What is an honorary post or voluntary commitment?
Many people in Offenbach and in Germany help other people and do something good.
Volunteering is like a job that you enjoy doing. You do it for other people. Or for animals. Or for the environment.
People do this in their free time after work, they don't get paid for it, they do it voluntarily.
They call it that: Volunteering. Another word for voluntary work is volunteering or civic engagement.
People who do voluntary work are called volunteers.
Anyone can take part
Anyone can volunteer to help.
- young and old people
- People with and without disabilities
- People from Germany, people from other countries
Because everyone has special abilities. This means that everyone can do something particularly well.
How and where can you help?
There are many things you can help with. For example
- visiting elderly people
- tending a garden
- helping at a party
- serving coffee
- help in a club
- helping children with their homework
- distribute food
- Helping people who are new to Offenbach and do not yet speak German
There are many places where you can help: in kindergarten, at school, in a museum, in a club, in a private group, with the fire department, in church.
Many reasons for volunteering
- you can learn a lot
- you can show what you can do
- you can meet new people
- Volunteering is fun
- Anyone can be a part of society by volunteering
- You choose the volunteer work yourself
- you do good
Do you have to do this forever?
You can think about how long you want to do it for.
Sometimes volunteering is very short, for example just one day.
You can also help for longer. For example, for one or two hours every week.
Advice and support
Volunteering is very important to the city of Offenbach. That is why there is a volunteer officer, Manuel Dieter.
He supports volunteers and Offenbach associations. He works together with the Volunteer Center.
The Volunteer Center is an advice center. The people there advise anyone who wants to volunteer. They have lots of information about volunteering. Advice is free of charge.
