Educational leave for further training in voluntary work
Under certain conditions, it is possible for employees in Hesse to take 5 days of educational leave per year (if they work full-time). This can also include attending educational events that serve to qualify or provide further training for voluntary work.
The training should be recognized by the Hessian Ministry for Social Affairs and Integration. The Ministry provides all important information on entitlement and application on the Bildungsberatung-Hessen website:

Certificate of good conduct
A certificate of good conduct provides information on whether and to what extent a person has a criminal record. Some organizations, associations and institutions attach great importance to this certificate. This is because in the case of particularly responsible activities, for example in work with children and young people, in care or in rescue services, certain criminal convictions could prevent someone from working in the desired area.

Proof of competence Hesse
People who volunteer at least 80 hours a year can have a certificate, also known as a "certificate of competence", issued in Hesse to confirm and recognize their voluntary work. The certificate of competence describes all the skills and qualifications that people have acquired or used through their voluntary work (e.g. teamwork and communication skills).
This is an important additional qualification that can be used, for example, when looking for an apprenticeship or when applying for a university/job.
The certificate of competence can be created independently or via the organization in which you are involved.

Qualification
All over Hesse, further training is taking place for those who want to do voluntary work. For many people, this is an important prerequisite for being able to fulfill new tasks - in the management and board work of associations, in their commitment to children or in caring for the elderly. The state of Hesse supports and promotes qualification and coordination measures for volunteer work in the social sector through the Offenbach Volunteer Center (FzOF) in cooperation with the Offenbach Adult Education Center.
In addition, the volunteer center itself offers qualifications, such as the annual senior citizens' companion training course.
Other organizations in Offenbach also often offer free training courses.

Remuneration for voluntary work
Volunteering is generally an unpaid activity without any compensation beyond reimbursement of expenses. In some cases, costs incurred, such as for travel, are covered by a flat-rate reimbursement. There is no entitlement to reimbursement of costs. Coordinate with the contact persons of the agencies/organizations involved.
The tax office supports part-time work in non-profit organizations with a tax bonus. Depending on the activity, volunteers may earn between 840 euros (honorary allowance) and 3,000 euros (exercise leader allowance) tax-free per year from 01.01.2021. It is important to know that the activity may not be carried out as a main occupation, serves charitable purposes and must be reported. Employees and pensioners must declare the lump sums to the tax office. Recipients of unemployment benefit I or II (Hartz IV) must report this to the employment agency or job center.

Insurance cover
If you decide to get involved and become a volunteer, the first thing you think about is what might happen. After all, you want to do good. But it's good to know under what circumstances voluntary work is covered by accident and liability insurance. Who pays if something happens? Or, more importantly, what is not insured? Where are volunteers themselves responsible?
As a rule, volunteers are insured by the organization they work for. In the case of associations, membership is usually required for insurance cover. In addition, all volunteers in Hessen are insured through the framework agreements that the state of Hessen has concluded with Sparkassenversicherung in order to close any gaps.
The framework agreements between the state of Hesse and the insurance providers include accident and liability insurance. They come into force if a claim is not covered by private or other primary insurance.

Certificate supplement
In Hesse, pupils can have a certificate issued as an attachment to their school report, also known as a "Zeugnisbeiblatt", to confirm and recognize their voluntary work. This contains information on the type and duration of the voluntary work and, if applicable, the skills and abilities acquired. This is an important additional qualification that can be used, for example, when looking for an apprenticeship or when applying for a place at university.
