City of Offenbach

The path to daycare and school for refugee children from Ukraine

After refugees have received all the necessary certificates and residence permits, the children can be registered at a school. The reception and advice center in the city and district of Offenbach is responsible for school-age pupils who have recently arrived in Germany.

Daycare centers

The Eigenbetrieb Kindertagesstätten Offenbach (EKO) operates all municipal daycare centers. In addition to the municipal daycare centers (EKO-Kitas), there are also daycare centers run by independent and church organizations. Registration takes place directly at the daycare centers.

On the following page you will find all information about the daycare centers and the registration options:

School entry and lateral entry examination

Children and young people attending school in Hesse are given a school entrance examination or an examination for children starting school. The school entry examination takes place before children start school. The "Seiteneinsteigeruntersuchung" is for children and young people who have already attended school, but who have moved to Hessen, for example.
Parents are invited to the public health department with their child. Doctors at the public health department carry out a general physical examination, check whether the child can see and hear well and ask whether there are any chronic illnesses. This examination is very important for the children, but also for the parents. In this way, possible illnesses or complaints can be detected at an early stage and the child can receive the necessary therapies and targeted support. If there are special restrictions (such as chronic illnesses or a disability), these are communicated to the school. Only in this way can these restrictions be taken into account and the children receive support in everyday school life.
In Germany, children are also required to be vaccinated against measles in order to attend school. If the children have not yet been vaccinated against measles, the parents will be advised about the vaccination on site and in individual cases the vaccination can be made up for directly at the examination date.

Please make sure you attend the appointment for the first child check-up, as this will give your child the best possible start at school. If you are unable to attend the appointment, the public health department asks that you cancel early so that the appointment can be rescheduled.
