International Girls' Day
What is International Day of the Girl Child?
International Day of the Girl Child is also known as World Girls' Day and is celebrated every year on October 11. It was established by the United Nations in 2011. The day aims to highlight the strengths and dreams of girls worldwide. Because every girl, no matter where she lives, should have the same rights and opportunities - be it at school, at work or in her free time.
Even though girls around the world should have the same rights, they often experience discrimination and violence - be it in the form of a lack of educational opportunities, domestic work or early marriage. Here in Europe, girls are also affected by physical violence, cybergrooming, bullying and catcalls, i.e. sexist comments or abusive messages.
International Day of the Girl Child aims to encourage girls around the world to be confident and pursue their dreams without letting obstacles stand in their way. International Day of the Girl Child is also about standing together for a world where girls can live safely and make their own choices. The aim is to raise awareness of issues such as education, health, violence, child marriage and gender inequality.
