The participatory online platform "Jewish Places" provides detailed information on places of Jewish life in Germany. It is a project of the Jewish Museum Berlin in collaboration with nationwide network partners and is now cooperating with the city of Offenbach: On the occasion of "Chai OF - Jewish Cultural Festival Offenbach", a digital city map will be presented on July 22, which makes the Jewish places of the city visible and can continue to grow via user-generated content (content co-created by users).
The first document proving that Jewish people lived in what is now Germany dates back to the year 321. Numerous events are commemorating the anniversary of 1700 years of Jewish life in Germany this year. The cultural management of the city of Offenbach wants to make the great significance of Jewish history for Offenbach tangible in the long term. The digital city map developed in cooperation with Jewish Places shows Jewish places in Offenbach as well as biographies of Offenbach Jews and leads to the 16 locations where the festival events will take place on July 22 and 23. This way, Offenbach's city center and its Jewish places can be explored on a city walk with a smartphone - even after the festival.
"The cooperation between Jewish Places and the city of Offenbach shows once again how digital and analog life can complement each other," says Hetty Berg, Director of the Jewish Museum Berlin. "The festival in the streets of the city celebrates Jewish life in the present, while the digital city map on the Chai OF website also provides information on local history. The locations receive additional attention during the festival and through the digital representation. This invites encounters and conversations about Jewish perspectives and the diversity of Jewish culture," says Hetty Berg. "It is precisely such encounters and conversations that the Jewish Museum Berlin wants to promote." Offenbach's Lord Mayor Dr. Felix Schwenke is also extremely pleased about the cooperation. "Offenbach's cultural management could not wish for a more competent and helpful partner than 'Jewish Places'," says Schwenke, "and together we can set an example of how historical significance and lively Jewish life in Offenbach today go hand in hand."
