Holy Cross
The Catholic parish of Heilig Kreuz in Offenbach-Waldheim was established on May 1, 1955 and comprises several small parish districts. These include An den Eichen, Lämmerspieler Weg, Mühlheimer Straße and the Waldheim and Rote Warte estates in the Mühlheim district. The Church of the Holy Cross was consecrated on 10 May 1956 by the then Bishop Dr. Albert Stohr; the first pastor was Dr. Karl Reiß from 1955 to 1985.
The Catholic rectory was the first new church to be built in the diocese of Mainz after the war. The architectural design is remarkable: architect Helmut Bilek envisioned a building that would bring people together with God from everyday life in contemplation, as if in a tent. The roof is supported like a tent roof by 14 meter high steel tubes. The focal point and eye-catcher inside the church is a twelve-metre-high wooden cross with a mighty bronze statue of Christ, sculpted by the Klemisch brothers, metal sculptors. From the cross, the Son of God embraces all visitors who look up to him with outstretched arms.
The parish offers children's and youth work in cooperation with the Heilig Geist parish in Offenbach-Rumpenheim and has its own kindergarten.
