City of Offenbach

DITIB Turkish Islamic Cultural Association - Yavuz Selim Mosque

It is the fate of places of worship in the city center that you can't see them from afar as you would a village. It is the same with the Yavuz Selim Mosque, the oldest in Offenbach. Only when you stand in front of the entrance to the inner courtyard in Bleichstraße do you see the mosaic-adorned minaret and the freshly designed entrance façade of the mosque. It is not only the brass crescent on the minaret that points to the direction of prayer, to Mecca. Even the stylish carpet patterns point in this direction.

The mosque community welcomes people of all ages and backgrounds. The approximately 350 members meet during the week and at weekends to pray together, share experiences and cultivate cultural traditions. New immigrants also find a place to go if they need advice and support.

The Yavuz Selim Mosque is artistically furnished with everything that characterizes a mosque. Instead of pictures and statues, the room is adorned with calligraphy, some of which is made of gold leaf, as well as decorative tiles originally supplied from Turkey. The prayer niche, the 'mihrab', not only indicates the direction of prayer, it also has an acoustic amplifying effect and is just as elaborately designed as the pulpit structure of the 'minbar'. The pulpit was designed by the Mühlheim craftsman Halim Engin, who specializes in mosque furnishings.

The congregation has had its own place of worship since 1977, initially in Domstraße. Since 1980, it has had its own community and mosque complex in Bleichstraße, which was completely redesigned in 2005 by architects Celal Bulut and Haluk Özbegli, who have close ties to the community.
