The weather and climate workshop becomes SCAPE° - Weather. Climate. People.
06.06.2024 – The weather and climate workshop has successfully completed the test phase. With immediate effect, it will become the "SCAPE° - Weather. Climate. People." The name change is accompanied by a conceptual reorientation of the interactive exhibition and experience space at Frankfurter Strasse 39.
"To be honest, I was initially sceptical as to whether we should rename the Weather and Climate Workshop," explains Lord Mayor Dr. Felix Schwenke. "From my point of view, the name nicely described what you can do there, namely also try things out, so almost 'work' in the literal sense. However, the program is much more varied than 'just' a workshop. With the name `SCAPE° - Weather. Climate. Mensch.', this place now has a name that may be a little more academic, but which is just as appropriate for a cultural venue as it is for a space for experience and discovery and thus for the extremely diverse, broad-based program. The human being is also clearly named here:
Lord Mayor Dr. Felix SchwenkeHow do we measure and decipher the weather? What role do we as humans play in the climate system? How do we deal with change?
SCAPE° approaches these questions on various levels: scientifically, socially, culturally and, of course, also for participation and 'work'. Apart from the name, it is important to me first and foremost that we continue our cooperation with the German Weather Service (DWD) with SCAPE°! It is only thanks to its expertise that the location will become a place like no other city in Germany, because the German Weather Service is only here with us."
Its President, Professor Dr. Sarah Jones, explains: "Offenbach and the DWD have repeatedly given their long-standing partnership new impetus with new projects. For example, the Weather Park was founded in 2005, followed by the Weather and Climate Workshop in the middle of the pedestrian zone at the beginning of 2021. Why is the DWD involved in these projects? Because as the national weather service, we also have a legal mandate to provide information about the weather, climate and climate change and its consequences and to warn of weather hazards and climate risks. In addition, it is very important for us as an employer that our employees, but also applicants, experience Offenbach as an attractive city worth living in. A family-friendly and stimulating city center is an important locational advantage in the competition for skilled workers. I am sure that SCAPE° will contribute to this with its innovative offering and will have an impact on the inner-city environment."
The fact that Offenbach is also breaking new ground as a climate municipality is commented on by Mayor and Climate Officer Sabine Groß: "Looking at perspectives is something special. As head of the climate department, it is important to me to support these citizens in becoming active themselves. Because the fear of climate change concerns many people, especially younger people, and sometimes triggers a feeling of powerlessness. The SCAPE° program can be a good source of inspiration to show what each individual can do to combat climate change and adapt to climate change. We want to encourage people to get involved - that is 'climate empowerment' for everyone."
First insights into Offenbach Week
Visitors can now gain their first insights into the new program of the adventure location and immerse themselves in the topics of weather, climate, climate change, people and the environment: during Offenbach Week from Friday, June 7, to Sunday, June 9, SCAPE° invites visitors to exciting experiments not just for children and to the "Bones, Dice, Shovels" games evening.
The new after-work offer "Wetter Mi" has already started on every second and fourth Wednesday evening - the next date is on June 12 from 6 pm. Workshops for kindergartens and schools can still be booked.
New name
The name SCAPE° is derived from the English word. The suffix -scape denotes spaces and areas that have a special character due to the things that can be perceived or experienced there. These can be natural landscapes or meteorological phenomena (landscape, seascape, cloudscape), but also man-made things. This includes an exhibition venue that creates plenty of space for people to come together and experience things - like the SCAPE° with the slogan "Weather, climate, change. We explain and explore it together."
As a leisure venue, SCAPE° is an important building block in the redevelopment of Offenbach's city center. In addition to the exhibition, the interactive site also offers a diverse program of events and workshops for young and old. SCAPE° will open its new permanent exhibition on November 30, 2024.
Program at SCAPE°
SCAPE° is already present in Offenbach and the surrounding area with various workshops and activities until the new exhibition opens on November 30. About SCAPE°
With its interactive exhibition, SCAPE° conveys knowledge about the topics of weather, climate and the role of humans. With its events, workshops and projects, SCAPE° ensures a lively exchange and links weather, climate and culture in an exciting way. In addition to its exhibition space, SCAPE° is present with activities in the urban environment and brings people together. SCAPE° is therefore an important player in the gradual transformation and revitalization of Offenbach's city centre.
SCAPE° has set itself the goal of providing impetus for climate and environmentally conscious city life. The basis for all these activities is a participative and democratic approach. Both the visitors and the team behind SCAPE° are encouraged to build up their individual climate competence with fun and optimism. The aim is to connect people and jointly develop scientifically based, sustainable, fair and practical ideas for living with climate change - for our city, our environment and our planet Earth.
SCAPE° is implemented by the German Weather Service (DWD) and the municipal offices for cultural management and economic development/city management and the Office for the Environment, Energy and Climate Protection.
