Meteosat 9 weather satellite station
The model of a Meteosat 9 weather satellite is also one of the exhibits in the weather park. In the meteorological adventure park on the Buchhügel, visitors can now find out how it works: Voyeurism at the highest level.
The Meteosat 9 weather satellite is used for weather observation and climate research. It continuously scans the earth like a scanner. The images and data obtained make it possible to analyze complex weather patterns, climate and environmental changes, which is not possible with observations on Earth. They help to detect and warn of severe weather at an early stage in order to avert or mitigate disasters in road, air and sea traffic as well as in the agricultural and construction industries.
Meteosat 9 was sent into space in 2005. Since then, it has been at an altitude of 36,000 kilometers above the equator. The images it delivers to the EUMETSAT control center in Darmstadt primarily provide information about the moisture content in the atmosphere, the distribution of ice and snow and the proportion of dust.
A 1:4 scale model of the Meteosat 9 weather satellite can be seen in the weather park. Supported by a stand construction, it rises above the visitors. Individual images of the real weather satellite are displayed and explained on a panel. The images show the earth and various weather phenomena from the perspective of the satellite camera.
The model is on permanent loan from EUMETSAT (European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites), an intergovernmental organization with currently 17 European member states, including Germany. These states finance and use the EUMETSAT programs. The staff of approximately 160 posts come from the member states. The working languages are English and French. EUMETSAT is responsible for the operation of the European weather satellites, including Meteosat, and for the distribution of data from these satellites.
