Monumental yet fragile in its delicate structure, the iron sculpture by Fabrizio Prevedello spans an interior wall of the Old Cemetery. The metal segments are reminiscent of a ladder that seems to grow directly out of the ground, only to disappear back into it on the other side of the listed building. The patina on the stylized rungs and the organic connection with the ground make the object appear as old as the cemetery itself. In the eye of the beholder, the irregular struts blend with the texture of the stone wall and appear as a symbol of an individual (life) path whose origin and end are uncertain. In the context of its surroundings, the object oscillates between an individually designed tomb and a symbolic monument.
