The exhibition "First Person Singular" at the KUNSTANSICHTEN 2026
The internet offers an almost endless variety of self-portraits that are fascinating in their self-interpretations and stagings. Selfies are at the center of this: snapshots with which people seek attention in the digital world. Attention has become a coveted currency, and there is an ongoing game between image and viewer.
A fleeting glance at these images constantly raises the question: Who is this person? When do we click on, when do we stop? In this digital wonderland, it is selected portraits that arouse our interest. But why these in particular? What stories do they tell, what secrets lie in a pose or a smile?
The portraits shown here are the result of a subjective selection from the wealth of Instagram photos. They are not just images of people, but mirrors of their self-interpretation. In them, digital staging and human curiosity meet - in search of the mysteries of the self and of others.
Haiko Emmel
Born in Frankfurt am Main in 1961, grew up and lives in Walldorf, studied computer science at TU Darmstadt, worked as a software architect at Hessischer Rundfunk from 1987 to 2021, married with two children. He began to work intensively with art and painting in his early youth. After a few works in oil, he discovered acrylic paint as a means of expression. Acrylic gave him the opportunity to work faster and more freely. In the early 1990s, he created many predominantly abstract acrylic paintings on paper and canvas. After courses at the Professional Association of Visual Artists in Frankfurt, at the Artistic Adult Education Center 3 in Vienna and with the portraitist Brigitte Guhle in Wiesbaden, he has devoted himself intensively to portrait and nude painting since 2003 and to abstract art again since mid-2011.
