The attempt to reconcile her present with the past brought Leyla Kurani to the realization of how profoundly certain experiences shape her. What moves her - and, Kurani believes, most others - is not the mere knowledge of another's reality, but the act of having lived or experienced that reality, whether as an unwitting observer or as an active accomplice.
In this artistic work, the artist explores the theme of captivity under occupation. In this context, Kurani understands prisons as deliberate places of humiliation and dehumanization. Since occupation never occurs in isolation, but is a social process, understanding this reality cannot take place in isolation either.
Through her performance, she seeks a form of understanding that goes beyond the pure intellect. Kurani uses the presence of the audience not as a goal in itself, but as a necessary part of a collective experience. By exposing herself to processes of dehumanization, Kurani enables herself as an artist to physically live through a reality that she could not cope with on her own. The audience becomes an indispensable counterpart in a shared observation of oppression and human consequence.
Leyla Amal Kurani
The artistic practice of Leyla Amal Kurani (*1996) is deeply rooted in her dual biography. After spending her childhood and youth in Amman, Jordan, and initially studying interior design in Mainz, she is now deepening her interdisciplinary work at the HfG Offenbach. At the intersection of performance and sculpture, she explores the tensions between cultures and the profound experiences of inequality and oppression. The separation from her homeland that shaped her, as well as the memories of loss and drastic change, exert a great influence on her work. Particularly in light of the political unrest in the Middle East and the influence her passport country has on her homeland, she feels a duty not only to observe herself and her own history, but also to protect those who have helped shape that history. Her works translate these points of friction between two worlds into a haunting material and physical language.
