Heat warning for Offenbach - How to stay healthy!

10.07.2023 – High temperatures are expected for the coming days. According to the German Weather Service, a heat warning is expected for Tuesday, July 11 in particular. You can use the WarnWetter app to find out about this. The extreme heat can cause damage to the health of humans, animals and plants. Damage to health can be avoided through timely prevention and correct behavior.

Experts advise drinking plenty of fluids, preferably in frozen form. However, it is better to avoid a lot of sugar, as this puts a strain on the body in addition to the high temperatures.

The City Health Department advises people to drink enough fluids and also to ensure that they take in sufficient minerals (salt). Physical exertion during extreme heat and when spending time in the sun should be avoided as far as possible. This means that jogging and playing soccer in the blazing sun are unhealthy in this heat. The skin should also be kept cool. Arm and foot baths help with this. Spraying the skin with clean tap water together with the effect of a fan also has a cooling effect.

The hot air stays outside if windows and curtains are closed in good time in the morning or blinds, shutters or shutters are lowered. Homes and workplaces should be ventilated in the early morning and late evening hours. Cross or shock ventilation is the best way to cool down and dispel moisture. Ventilation should preferably take place when it is cooler outside than inside. At night, light clothing and the use of sheets instead of blankets is recommended.

Babies and small children are particularly at risk, as are people over 65 and people with physical illnesses, especially diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and high blood pressure. For these people, the room temperature should not exceed 26 degrees Celsius, even during the day.

Further tips, especially for older people, can be found in the City of Offenbach's heat brochure at www.offenbach.de/hitze.
