Infectious diseases are caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites and are among the most common causes of death worldwide (pneumonia, diarrheal diseases, AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria). Treatment is made more difficult by increasing resistance. The main causes of the increasing development of resistance are the inappropriate use of antibiotics and the inconsistent application of necessary hygiene measures to prevent infections.
Hygiene measures and vaccinations are among the most effective preventive measures against infectious diseases. The aim of a vaccination is to protect the vaccinated person from an infectious disease. If many people in a population are vaccinated, it is also possible to eliminate individual pathogens regionally and ultimately eradicate them worldwide.
