Important things to know when traveling with dogs and cats

If you want to travel with your pet, you will need different documents depending on the country you are traveling to. Please inform yourself in good time so that your trip runs smoothly!

If you are thinking about traveling with your pet, please consider the following points in advance:

Is my pet fit enough for the trip?
Is my pet anxious? Can I expect him to travel alone in the hold of an airplane?
Depending on the type of animal, you should try to look after it at home. Cats, for example, are very loyal to their location and usually tolerate it better to stay in their familiar surroundings and be looked after by a trustworthy person there
Depending on the animal species, certain countries should be avoided. "Short-nosed" dogs(e.g. pugs) have a problem with thermoregulation per se and should not travel to countries that are too hot.

Official veterinary certificate

The official veterinary health certificate is issued by an official veterinarian from the veterinary office at your place of residence. At the appointment, your animal will be clinically examined and certified that it comes from a rabies-free country and has no obvious infectious diseases. The rabies vaccination will also be checked and noted.

In principle, the certificate is valid for 10 days after it is issued. Some countries only accept the certificate if it was issued five days before departure, for example. It is important to inform yourself well before departure.

If you live in the city of Offenbach and require an official veterinary certificate, please arrange an appointment with us as soon as possible. Please send us an email with the following information in good time, at least 1 week before departure:

Full name incl. address and telephone number of the owner
Photos of the vaccination card: pages with information about the owner / information about the dog / chip number / issuing veterinarian / all rabies vaccinations / depending on the country also all other vaccinations.
the rabies antibody titer certificate (for non-listed third countries).

The cost of the certificate is approximately €48 per animal, depending on the amount of work involved, and must be paid in cash by the owner on site.

Special features

Some countries have additional entry requirements for dogs and cats:

Turkey: Special regulations for re-entry into Germany. After a stay in Turkey, cats and dogs require a rabies titer test in order to be allowed to re-enter the EU, i.e. Germany. This should be arranged with your vet before your vacation. Furthermore, an additional document must be completed in advance for the trip to Turkey and brought to the appointment at the veterinary office:

Serbia: Special provisions for re-entry to Germany.

Norway: Here the animal must be dewormed shortly before entry and this must also be documented by the veterinary surgeon in the EU pet passport.

Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Israel and Iceland: Very extensive entry requirements with quarantine and extensive preparations.

It should always be borne in mind that if the documents are missing and a border check is carried out, the animal may either not be allowed to continue its journey or must first be kept in quarantine on re-entry.
