Mayor Schneider and Airport Director Weiß call for participation in the 200th Monday demonstration

27.01.2017 – The 200th Monday demonstration will take place on January 30, 2017 at 6 p.m. in Terminal 1 of Frankfurt Airport. For more than five years, people affected by aircraft noise have been meeting regularly on Mondays to demonstrate against the increased noise pollution following the airport expansion and to symbolically bring the noise back to its place of origin.

The organizers of the approximately one-and-a-half-hour event next Monday are the "Alliance of Citizens' Initiatives - No Airport Expansion - Night Flight Ban from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.", other action alliances and environmental groups. Lord Mayor Horst Schneider and Paul-Gerhard Weiß, Head of the Airport Department, are calling for participation in the 200th Monday demonstration. Both Offenbach city councillors will be among the demonstrators.

Head of Aviation Weiß: Show solidarity with the protest movement

"It is a good opportunity for many people to show solidarity with the protest movement and to denounce the aviation industry on its own premises in front of the public," says Paul-Gerhard Weiß. Together with Schneider, Weiß is therefore appealing to all people in the region to take a stand against the unchecked expansion of Frankfurt Airport and to demonstrate with them at Frankfurt Airport.

The northwest runway was built in order to be able to handle the predicted increase in traffic. Fraport's experts had predicted over 650,000 aircraft movements for 2016. "In reality, there were just over 462,000 aircraft movements, which is roughly the same level as in 2000 and could have been handled by the old runway system without any problems," Weiß continues. There was also hardly any improvement in punctuality. In order to be able to justify the expansion of the airport at all, low-cost airlines are to be lured to the airport with discounts. Aircraft noise, pollutants, ultra-fine dust and roof tiles repeatedly falling down due to wake vortices threaten the health of people living near the airport.
