City of Offenbach

Sustainable financing

The city of Offenbach has placed a so-called green promissory note loan in the amount of 136.5 million euros on the capital market. This provides the city with money to invest in sustainable projects to improve the infrastructure. For example, in the energy-efficient refurbishment or new construction of daycare centers and schools. On the other hand, the implementation of the new form of financing contributes to climate protection, as the energy-efficient buildings help to continuously reduce the city's greenhouse gas emissions in order to become climate-neutral by 2045.

The financing of central infrastructure projects via green promissory note loans and the necessary establishment of "GEO - Grüner Eigenbetrieb Offenbach" was approved by the city councillors in August 2024. The loan will be processed via GEO in accordance with the City of Offenbach's Green Finance Framework. The framework contains criteria and guidelines for financing sustainable projects with clear benefits for the environment, climate and society. The framework is in line with the Green Bond Principles of the International Capital Market Association (ICMA) and the Green Loan Principles of the Loan Market Association (LMA).
