Köszeg (Hungary)

Located in a cross-border Austro-Hungarian nature park, Köszeg with its 12,000 inhabitants has made its mark on Central European history several times.

In 1532, the first Ottoman attempt to conquer Vienna failed at its castle. In 1989, Hungary made the first opening in the "Iron Curtain" here, and the citizens of Köszeg took a lively part in it.

The town is suffering from the collapse of its once most important economic sector, the textile industry. It is seeking compensation in services and tourism, e.g. through the medical use of a carbonated cold water spring, the expansion of the town baths and the establishment of new hotels and restaurants. Architecture from the 18th century Habsburg period characterizes the image of the old town. A "hero's gate" commemorates the defense of 1532 and a museum in the house of the former captain of the town guard provides information about traditional crafts. The Gothic Church of St. James with its baroque additions is highly regarded. The Church of the Sacred Heart is also worth a visit. It impresses with windows depicting Hungarian saints and a monstrance from the 15th century.

The castle in the north-west of the city center dates back to the 13th century. It was given its present form at the end of the 18th century. Its castle museum exhibits a rich collection of old weapons, furnishings and documents.

The mountainous surroundings with the foothills of the Alps offer opportunities for hiking and winter sports. The flora and fauna are typically unspoiled.
