Weekly report from May 13 to 19, 2024

As soon as it gets warmer outside, our colleagues in the city police notice this in the number of reported disturbances of the peace. This week the weather was very mixed and the number of reported disturbances of the peace was below average at 28. However, as is so often the case, not every disturbance of the peace is a disturbance of the peace. Reports of noise quickly turn out to be arguments, fights or even cases of domestic violence. In one case, the municipal police were able to arrest two fugitives after a brawl and hand them over to the state police.

During this working week, the technical traffic service and the traffic police carried out speed checks at 44 measuring points and initiated 306 proceedings for exceeding the speed limit.

There was one warning each for incorrect parking or other traffic violations for 2241 vehicles or their owners.

The Offenbach registration office registered 36 new vehicles for de-stamping. Citizens reported 40 cases of significant traffic obstructions this week. These include blocked driveways, parking spaces for the severely disabled, construction sites or temporary stopping bans (for example for construction work or removals). The city police had 28 vehicles towed away because the drivers could not be reached.

Due to a technical defect, an articulated lorry broke down in the middle of the Carl Ulrich Bridge and had to be repaired on site. The city police closed the bridge for an hour until the train could continue its journey.
However, it only took a few minutes to close the road to make way for a family of ducks.

The shortage of parking spaces in the city gave one resident the idea of blocking off "his" parking space with flutter tape as soon as he had to vacate it for work. On his return, he then took it back until the angry neighbors put an end to the goings-on by notifying the city police.

On Wednesday, a passer-by reported a driver who was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. An immediate check by a patrol actually revealed a breath alcohol level of 1.86 per mille and thus absolute unfitness to drive. The consequence is now criminal proceedings, the withdrawal of the driver's license and subsequently also a medical psychological examination (MPU).

Due to ongoing complaints about noise, littering and boorish behavior, the city police, as well as the state police, check the Walter Spiller Bridge several times a day. Time and again, people are found there with their vehicles, abusing the bridge as a place to meet, eat pizza and fast food and listen to loud music. This leads to considerable noise pollution, large amounts of packaging waste and the blocking of footpaths. Anyone who parks there illegally must expect a fine of over 55 euros and will be banned from the site. The bridge also had to be cleared this week by a wedding party that stopped there to celebrate. Another group's celebrations turned into a fight. When the patrols arrived, 12 young people were still involved in the dispute and were rigorously removed from the bridge.

Due to broken traffic lights, the city police controlled crossings by hand on two days in order to keep traffic flowing safely.

The city police were called to 9 helpless people. The majority were clearly intoxicated. Two people were temporarily admitted to a psychiatric clinic due to their mental situation. During the check, one person stated that he had been living in Germany illegally for three years and was handed over to the state police.

The municipal police once again had to help several times to enforce house rules.

In a building that was evacuated weeks ago due to construction defects, the municipal police once again found people in dormitories. They had the building evacuated again due to the hygienic conditions and fire safety deficiencies and temporarily housed the people in the city's emergency accommodation.

A report of a burning smell in the old Kaufhof building caused a high level of alarm. Fortunately, this turned out to be a false alarm and therefore did not threaten the city's new planned Mitte station. The smoke development at another construction site turned out to be nothing more than a cloud of dust.

There were two very dangerous incidents this week. During an argument between two drinking buddies, one of the parties pulled out a knife. In the other case, a man threatened uninvolved passers-by in Büsingpark with an axe and a shovel for reasons as yet unknown. The city police were able to calm both people down and persuade them to put down their weapons.

Once again, illegal gambling machines were seized in pubs.

In addition to the usual jobs, there were a few less commonplace ones. At the S-Bahn station, the city police came across two children aged 9 and 12, who had apparently been forgotten by their parents on the platform. After some searching, the city police were able to hand them back to their parents.

An area in Dreieich Park was closed due to falling branches.
There was a dog control in Leonhard-Eißnert-Park on Tuesday.
A city playground was also closed due to an acute infestation of the oak processionary moth.

There were few events and meetings this week. Unfortunately, OFC lost its fourth game in a row against Steinbach Haiger and finished the season in 11th place. Otherwise, there were two rallies at the Stadthalle and several election campaign stands and events to mark the European elections. One meeting highlighted the significance of Pentecost in modern times.

The city police spent many hours on foot patrol in the pedestrian zone, focusing on the harbor area, Komm Center Offenbach and the surrounding schools. Once again, a number of complaints were received.
The cooperation patrol of the city and state police, which is on the road together for six hours a day in the city area, has been well received and is highly visible. There is a strong presence on foot patrols, but the program also includes joint checks of restaurants, paths and squares.
