Pre-Christmas winter weather prevented a view of the renovated artificial turf pitch at the Eichwaldweg sports facility last week. Nevertheless, Lord Mayor Dr. Felix Schwenke was not deterred by the heavy snowfall and celebrated "another important milestone for Offenbach sport". The Lord Mayor thanked all the employees of the Sports Office, GBM and OPG as well as the specialist planners, who "have accompanied this sports facility development with the utmost care and personal commitment. With the completion of the work, the pitch is now state of the art again and will hopefully provide the clubs using it with a good basis for their sport for many years to come," said Schwenke and emphasized: "We are not yet at the end of the road at Eichwaldweg. The sports facility development plan has shown us how we can efficiently and sustainably develop the sports facilities in Offenbach to meet the needs of the present and the future."

Lord Mayor Dr. Felix Schwenke jokingly described the unusual inauguration of an artificial turf pitch in the snow as a "historic moment", as an inauguration in the snow is unheard of in Offenbach's sporting history, at least among those currently active in the service, and is also unlikely to happen in the future. Schwenke nevertheless handed over the pitch for its sporting purpose in front of almost 100 visitors from the sports clubs. Not only soccer is played there. The field hockey section of the Offenbach rowing club and the rugby section of OSC Rosenhöhe, which plays in the first national league, also use the pitch. The volunteers of the ORV provided hot drinks in the evening.

The sports facility was equipped with an artificial turf pitch 17 years ago. Since then, the pitch has been used for training all year round and almost continuously - and the material was worn down to the synthetic turf, making it necessary to replace it. The new surface is of the latest generation and consists of an artificial turf system with crimped fibers and quartz sand infill. In addition, for the first time in Offenbach, a corn granulate is being installed that behaves like rubber when it absorbs water and enables consistent playing characteristics.
