City of Offenbach installs LED floodlights at municipal outdoor sports facilities

26.01.2023

At the city's outdoor sports facilities in Bierbrauerweg, Eichwaldweg, Mühlheimer Straße, Rosenhöhe, Rumpenheim, Tempelsee, Waldhof and Wörth, the old floodlights on existing floodlights were replaced with new, energy-efficient LED floodlights, which have been in operation since fall 2022.

Replacing existing and outdated climate-damaging floodlights with energy-efficient LED lighting has many advantages for the city and users as well as nature and the environment.

On the one hand, operating costs are saved in the long term and the lighting is improved for sports enthusiasts. In addition, funding of up to 35% of the total costs incurred was acquired from the state of Hesse and as part of the federal government's National Climate Initiative (NKI) via the Z-U-G project management agency. And finally, the city is making a valuable contribution to climate protection with comparatively little effort, as a considerable amount of CO2 is saved in addition to the operating costs.

According to calculations, this results in an average reduction of 124 tons per sports ground over an assessment period of 20 years. Together, this amounts to around 930 tons of CO2. An estimated 99,845 kWh of electricity can be saved each year, which is around 90% compared to the old floodlight systems. Over 20 years, the measures could save around 360 thousand euros, which could reduce the costs of maintaining the city's sports facilities by around 18 thousand euros a year. In addition, the light immissions are measurably lower compared to the old spotlights, as the LED lights emit less heat and radiation. The illuminance and extensive measurements for nature and insect protection were coordinated with the city's environmental agency.

All measures were divided into individual projects so that the conversion could be implemented flexibly according to demand, use or availability of materials or companies. Additional spotlights were installed at some locations to partially illuminate neighboring lawns. These measures mean that sports clubs can use the pitches for longer in the evenings, especially in September, which has been welcomed by the sports clubs.

The measures were funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety on the basis of a decision by the German Bundestag.

National climate protection initiative

With the National Climate Initiative, the Federal Environment Ministry has been initiating and funding numerous projects that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions since 2008. Its programs and projects cover a broad spectrum of climate protection activities: From the development of long-term strategies to concrete assistance and investment support measures. This diversity is a guarantee for good ideas. The National Climate Initiative helps to anchor climate protection on the ground. It benefits consumers as well as companies, local authorities and educational institutions.
