Offenbach gets moving: website bundles free exercise offers

05.04.2024 – Sport and exercise not only have a positive effect on health, but also promote mental well-being. And according to some experts, exercising in the fresh air also boosts your mood and strengthens your immune system.

There are many free outdoor exercise areas in Offenbach. The city forest, the banks of the Main and various parks invite you to go for a walk, jog or walk. There are also public table tennis tables, basketball hoops and skating facilities on the banks of the Main, at Mathildenplatz and in some parks. The offer is rounded off by exercise trails, which are also popular with older people, as well as various cycle routes. Children and young people can let off steam on 90 playgrounds and football pitches.

"Sport and exercise are of central importance for promoting health," emphasizes Mayor and Head of Health Sabine Groß. "And since we all want to grow up and grow old in a healthy way, we set up a coordination office for health promotion and prevention at the public health department in the city of Offenbach three years ago. It networks stakeholders in this area and aims to create services that are easily accessible and meet people's health needs. But also, of course, to make existing services visible." This is exactly where the "Offenbach gets moving" website comes in. It brings together all the opportunities that exist in Offenbach. However, the best offer is of no use to anyone if it is not known: "We had 3,000 postcards printed to advertise the new website and gave them out to the district offices, social associations, advice centers, the volunteer center, the adult education center, the citizens' office and other offices," says Christine Langenbach, who heads the coordination office.

The website has the advantage that we can simply add new offers - and there will be a few more in Offenbach.

Website "Offenbach on the move"

On the website www.offenbach.de/of-bewegt-sich, visitors can select the right free exercise program for them from a list or use a map to view the offers in their district. Not all sports equipment has to be purchased: Table tennis or juggling sets, boules balls, frisbee, penny boards and more can be borrowed from the Library of Things in the city library. The district office on Mathildenplatz lends out table tennis sets, skipping ropes, Viking chess and boccia balls, among other things, and the Lauterborn district office has Frisbees, Gummitwist, boccia games, softball and soccer, for example.

Anyone who would like to exercise with their peers will also find what they are looking for on the website. It also lists special courses tailored to children and young people or exercise clubs for older people. All of Offenbach's sports clubs can also be reached via the website, as they offer memberships and many activities ranging from gymnastics, ball sports and dancing to boxing and martial arts for little money.

The "Offenbach gets moving" project was implemented in cooperation with the Office for Planning and Building, the Sports Office and the Office for the Public and is being continuously expanded.
