Bieber and Bürgel district development: citizens have voted on projects for the future

22.03.2021

Over the past two months, citizens of the Bieber and Bürgel districts have had the opportunity to evaluate and favor project ideas for the future of their districts and simply vote on which projects are most important to them. The project ideas came from various participation campaigns, such as the joint working meeting on the Bieber town center, the online dialog "Mitte machen" (Bürgel) or from the digital ideas map for the 2017 urban development concept for the Bürgel district. People were also able to submit their own project ideas. A total of 257 votes were allocated to the project ideas in Bürgel and 140 votes in Bieber. Citizens also provided important information on the possible projects in the districts.

Voting results for the Bürgel town center:

The revitalization and redesign of the Dalles is one of the most important projects for the people of Bürgel (most votes). In future, the Dalles is to become a central square and lively meeting place in Bürgel's town center. Ideas need to be found as to how the existing offerings can be supplemented without creating competition and how the quality of stay can be improved. Specifically, a concept for the design of the square is to be developed and implemented. Citizens should be involved in developing the concept.

Other favored projects:

  • Install a tour of the historic town center. The aim is to show the historical traces and structures that characterize the Bürgel townscape.
  • Design of the Reichstag to mark the 1,000th anniversary
  • Make the connection between the banks of the Main, Dalles and the center visible so that day tourists are also "lured" from the Main to the center
  • Ban on trucks driving through the town center
  • Strengthening clubs and neighborhood networks
  • Create meeting places

Voting results for the Bieber town center:

The citizens of Bieber see the redesign of Aschaffenburger Strasse as the most important project for the future development of the district. Here, too, a concept needs to be developed and implemented. The same applies to a tour of the historic town center.

Other favored projects:

  • Revitalization of the former train station
  • Renovation of the playground on Pfarrgasse
  • Improvement of the bicycle infrastructure
  • Establishment of a market to complement existing offerings
  • Strengthening the retail trade
  • Greening of streets

The entire voting results will be summarized in a brochure for all interested parties in the coming weeks and published by the City of Offenbach.

What happens next

Both the ranking of the project ideas submitted and the comments made will be incorporated into the updated urban development concept by the City of Offenbach's planners from the Urban Development and Town Planning Department over the coming weeks. Based on the votes of the citizens and a technical assessment by the city, priorities will be set and a timetable for individual projects will be drawn up. As a result, the Bieber and Bürgel concepts are to be merged and approved by the city councillors, probably in May of this year. If Corona permits, a joint closing event will then also take place.

The aim is to implement the selected projects step by step over the next ten years in both town centers as part of the "Vibrant Centers" urban development program. To this end, a so-called "core area management" will be set up by the city of Offenbach, which will act as an interface between the district/town center and the administration. It is the local point of contact and is intended to support and initiate projects. A survey is currently being prepared for citizens of the districts to answer the question of which activities the "core area management" should take on.

Special "Living Centers" program

The Local Partnership is a special feature of the "Vibrant Centres" program. Citizens and interested parties can actively support the implementation of projects and develop and implement their own projects in this specially established committee. The local partnership is to be established for both town centers in the coming months. We are not only looking for citizens and interested parties from Bieber and Bürgel, but from the whole of Offenbach. In principle, anyone from Offenbach who is interested in working and shaping the districts.

    Bieber Bürgel - Make center

"Bieber Bürgel - Mitte machen" (Bieber Bürgel - making the center) is the motto under which the two town centers are to be strengthened and specific projects implemented.
