City of Offenbach

Renovate Schäferstraße playground

The city of Offenbach would like to renovate the playground on the corner of Schäferstraße and Hermannstraße and expand the play facilities. To this end, it has asked residents for their ideas and wishes.

Current situation

The next milestone for the renovation of the Schäferstraße playground has been reached: in January 2025, the city council passed the project resolution for the renovation of the Schäferstraße playground and the redesign of the Schäferstraße / Hermannstraße public space. This means that the outdated playground will be comprehensively renovated and developed into an attractive, modern meeting place for the entire neighborhood.

What is planned

The renovation includes the complete redesign of the approximately 2,700 playground and the upgrading of the adjacent streetscape. In addition to new play facilities for children up to the age of 14, seating and meeting areas for adults will also be created to strengthen the location as the center of the neighborhood.

Important aspects of the planning are

  • Combination of classic and open play facilities
  • Recreation and meeting zones for all generations
  • Barrier-free access and inclusive play options
  • Sustainable design with reuse of existing materials
  • New planting of climate-adapted trees (25 new plantings with 15 necessary felling)
  • Green canopies and more shade from trees
  • Installation of bicycle racks at both entrances
  • Renovation of contaminated ground areas
  • Improving the quality of life at the Schäferstraße / Hermannstraße intersection

The measure is part of the urban development program "Social Cohesion - Southern Inner City / Senefelder Quarter" and is supported with around 75 percent funding from the federal and state governments. The total budget amounts to 1.4 million euros.

Next steps

The technical planning is now well advanced.

  • Tenders are to be invited and construction companies commissioned at the beginning of 2026.
  • Construction is scheduled to start in summer 2026.
  • During the construction period, children will be able to use the playground at Friedrichsweiher, which is expected to be completed by then.

Review of citizen participation "Senefelder think along!"

The City of Offenbach gathered ideas and wishes from citizens at various events in 2023. These have been incorporated into the planning.

These were:

  • May 9, 2023 Kick-off with presentation of the project and participation process at the South City Center Round Table

  • June 1, 2023 Children's participation: On-site appointments with the children of the KJP, the "Christian-Pleß-Straße" daycare center and the management of the "Sternschnuppe" toddler group from the immediate neighborhood.

  • June 16, 2023 Join-in café (also on site) for all other user groups.

  • At the same time, flyers were posted in the neighborhood to provide information, but also with the opportunity to write down wishes and hand them in at the district office.

  • July 7, 2023 Stand at the Senefelder neighborhood festival with another opportunity to name ideas/wishes, weight said wishes or obtain information.

  • Autumn 2023 The contract for the planning services was awarded.
  • December 2023 Termination of the lease for the playground.
  • April 1, 2024 Takeover of the playground by the Office for Planning and Building.
  • June 6, 2024 Preliminary design plans were presented at the playground and discussed with residents.

Interested parties could also contact the Senefelderquartier district office at Hermannstraße 16 directly.
