How can mobility in a city district be designed to improve the quality of life? This is what the city of Offenbach wants to test in the "transform-R" project of the FrankfurtRhineMain Regional Association. Through a real-world laboratory, i.e. practical testing on site, the aim is to gain insights into how to make urban districts more liveable, ecological and socially just.

Opening Ceremony for the transform-R Real-World Laboratory
Over the coming months, the Senefelderquartier will be a place for experimentation and community participation—a real-world laboratory called “transform-R.”
On July 2, 2026, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the turning circle on Gabelsbergerstraße, we were pleased to welcome many interested residents to our opening celebration.
The project area
The project area includes the Senefelderquartier and the underpass between Bismarckstraße and Marienstraße (west of the main railway station, as an extension of Luisenstraße).
What is actually happening?
With the aim of improving the quality of life and making the neighborhood more attractive and socially equitable, various measures are being implemented as part of the real-world laboratory. The initial timeframe for this in Offenbach is 12 months. During this period, measurements will be conducted by Goethe University, participation opportunities will be offered to residents, and adjustments will be made as needed. If the results are positive, the measures will be made permanent.
Creating a pleasant environment
Newly created gathering spots at various locations throughout the neighborhood have been set up since June 19, providing the neighborhood with new meeting places and green oases.
- Combination seating and planter units provide shade, seating, and gathering spots
- Planters bring more greenery to the city
- A bicycle repair station and bike racks have been installed at the southern entrance to the train station
At least one additional piece of seating furniture is planned and will be built as part of a participatory initiative with residents. As soon as a date is set, all details about the initiative will be published on this page.
Reduce traffic congestion
Over the past few years, traffic patterns have changed throughout the city—and in this neighborhood as well: A traffic study conducted at the start of the planning process indicated that the Senefelder neighborhood is often used as a bypass for the surrounding major thoroughfares. So-called “modal filters” are now intended to redirect car traffic back onto these roads—and thus away from residential streets.
In traffic planning, a modal filter refers to a structural measure that prevents through traffic for cars, while allowing bicycles, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles to continue passing through. At the same time, the existing bicycle lanes on Senefelderstraße and Schäfer-/Arndtstraße are to be strengthened for bicycle traffic.
- The intersection of Schäferstraße and Hermannstraße will be closed to through traffic; pedestrians and cyclists are exempt from this restriction.
- The intersection of Senefelder Straße and Gustav-Adolf-Straße will be closed to through traffic; pedestrians and cyclists are exempt from this restriction.
- One-way traffic will be in effect on the southern section of Schäferstraße. Access to the Penny underground parking garage will remain open in both directions; the one-way street will be open to bicycle traffic traveling in the opposite direction.
- One-way traffic regulation on Hermannstraße in the section between Senefelder Straße and Schäferstraße. The one-way street is open to bicycle traffic in the opposite direction.
Involving local people at an early stage is a central component of the project. The perspectives of those who move around the neighbourhood on a daily basis are particularly important. Goethe University Frankfurt conducted an initial household survey at the beginning of 2024. Residents were asked about central topics of the project. Participation was further expanded from mid-2025:

Following the survey, ideas for the real-world laboratory were developed together with citizens. Around 25 people took part and discussed challenges and opportunities in the neighborhood under three key questions. The most important results are summarized below:

Background
In September 2024, the city councillors approved Offenbach's participation in the "transform-R" research project of the FrankfurtRhineMain Regional Association. The aim of the project is to research and further develop innovative approaches to climate-friendly mobility. A central component of this is the redesign of public spaces - because streets, squares and paths are not just traffic areas, but also living spaces. The focus is on social aspects such as the fair and needs-based distribution of space between all road users and improving the quality of life in cities and municipalities. Municipalities and rural districts are specifically supported in implementing sustainable mobility solutions and effective climate protection locally and thus actively shaping the transport transition.
As part of the research project, the real-world laboratory is receiving intensive scientific support. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space. In addition to the FrankfurtRhineMain Regional Association, the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, the ISOE - Institute for Social-Ecological Research and the ifeu - Institute for Energy and Environmental Research are involved in the implementation of the project. Implementation in Offenbach is also being supported by the traffic planning office Planersocietät.
