City of Offenbach

Free energy advice

The Office for the Environment and Climate of the City of Offenbach offers private individuals a cost-neutral energy consultation for their building in Offenbach. The energy consultation can help you to get an initial overview of how you can modernize your building. Whether single-family homes or apartment buildings - anyone can take advantage of the consultation service.

Be prepared for the future: The Building Energy Act (GEG).

Since the beginning of 2024, the GEG has been a key regulation for increasing energy efficiency and promoting renewable energies in Germany. It stipulates that new buildings must meet strict energy requirements in order to keep energy consumption as low as possible.

Existing buildings are also affected: If your home is extended or expanded to a larger extent, then thermal insulation must also be met when renewing the outer shell or renovating the roof. If you extend by more than 50 square meters of floor space, the new part of the building must also meet the GEG requirements for new buildings.

Heating systems in particular are decisive for the energy efficiency and CO2 emissions of a house. Therefore, in the case of existing heating systems that are irreparably damaged, new heating systems installed must generate at least 65% of their heat from renewable energies or unavoidable waste heat.

Detailed information on the GEG can be found here (opens in a new tab).

The Office for the Environment and Climate offers a free impulse consultation for your building in Offenbach with externally or internally commissioned, certified energy consultants to provide an overview of your residential building and to discuss the next steps with the energy consultant.

An impulse consultation can only be carried out if you agree that an evaluation of the energy consultation may be carried out by the Office for the Environment and Climate after two years. In the evaluation, you will be asked whether and, if so, what you have done to improve the energy efficiency of your building.

What is an energy consultation?

As part of an impulse consultation, certified energy consultants analyze your energy consumption and make specific recommendations on how you can renovate your building to make it more climate-friendly and energy-efficient. Some measures include optimizing the heating system, insulating the building envelope or switching to renewable energies such as solar power. The impulse consultation is intended to give you an initial overview of your building.

How does an energy consultation work?

1. registration via the registration form of the Office for Environment and Climate.

2. forwarding of the data to an external or internal energy consultant appointed by the Office.

3. arranging an appointment with a certified external or internal energy consultant and clarifying the prioritization of topics for the impulse consultation.

4. implementation of the impulse consultation (depending on the type of building and effort involved)

5. preparation of a consultation protocol for each impulse consultation carried out (current status of energy consumption and energy status of the building, compliance with the GEG, proposals for energy-efficient upgrading of the building).

6. sending of information material and offers of support by the Office for the Environment for Climate.

7. if necessary, further monitoring and support of the refurbishment process depending on requirements and expenditure.

The State Energy Agency (LEA) of the State of Hesse has compiled extensive information on the subject of energy advice. The consumer advice center also offers initial advice on home modernization. The LEA also provides detailed information on energy advice for companies and the possibilities for financial support from the federal government.
