School day all about bikes: Pupils find cycle path to school

The 2018 Bike Day at Leibniz School was a hive of activity in the schoolyard: 240 pupils, parents, teachers, visitors and just as many bicycles made their way through the various stations. "Anyone can come to school by bike," was the message from lead teacher Gunnar Coppik. And that's exactly what Bike Day is all about: The children should find their way to school. To this end, the pupils at the Leibniz School went through various stations. At the youth traffic school station, the bikes were checked for safety and the Artefakt bike store carried out minor repairs. Afterwards, the pupils were able to test themselves and their bikes on the skills course run by the youth traffic school and the parents' council.

Coppik and Nina Merten from the Office for the Environment, Energy and Climate Protection offered advice on how to get to school. Here, the children learned the best routes to take to school, what they should look out for and that there is an online school cycle route planner to help them find their way. "A cycling day in the fifth grade refreshes what the pupils have learned from their cycling test and gives them an understanding of their new school's surroundings," explained Nina Merten from the Environmental Agency. It is important to actively show the children that there are alternatives to mom and dad's car. "Cycling is not only important for children's cognitive development and health, but also for climate protection. That's why we are always happy to support the campaign day." The importance of wearing a helmet was illustrated by a demonstration by the parents' council, who used watermelons to show what a fall onto the asphalt can do with and without a helmet.

Finally, the children went on a bike ride, which was also intended as an exercise for the CITY CYCLING competition, in which the Leibniz School would like to do well again.
