Offenbach children are climate-friendly on the road until September 27

16.09.2024

Over 3,000 children from Offenbach am Main are taking part in this year's Children's Mile campaign. A total of twelve schools and one daycare center are taking part. The children collect "green Footprints" by making climate-friendly journeys on foot, by scooter, by bike or by bus and train. The campaign starts on Monday, September 16 and runs until September 27 this year. Afterwards, all Offenbach "green footprints" will be sent to climate politicians at the 29th UN Climate Change Conference in Baku together with wishes and demands.

Last year, a total of 21,704 Green Footprints were collected.

"Every year, around 170 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are caused by traffic in Germany, which corresponds to a fifth of total emissions. As much as 7.5 million tons of CO2 could be avoided if only around 30 percent of short journeys of up to six kilometers in city centres were made without a car. Anyone who takes their child to school or nursery by car will cover such a short distance from home. So-called "parent cabs" also block both the roads and sidewalks for children and therefore often pose a danger. I am therefore all the more pleased that so many schools and even a daycare center have accepted our invitation this year and I am counting on a new Green Footprints record," says Mayor and Climate Officer Sabine Groß. "The Green Footprints campaign is open to all schools, kindergartens and childcare facilities. The more facilities take part, the more Footprints are collected and the louder our children's messages can be heard. We organize the campaign in the city area and finance the associated material for the facilities."

This year, there will once again be a celebratory award ceremony for all participating facilities, where participants will receive great prizes for the playground on the subject of exercise and mobility.
