City promotes private tree planting and preservation of old trees
21.11.2024
The city of Offenbach is setting an example for climate protection, species conservation and quality of life: at its most recent meeting, the city council decided to introduce a new funding guideline. This offers financial support for private tree planting and the preservation of existing old trees. In future, citizens will be able to apply for grants to plant a financially supported tree in their garden or to take measures to preserve old trees. Mayor and Head of the Environment Department Sabine Groß emphasizes the importance of this initiative and calls for participation: "With this funding guideline, we want to motivate all Offenbach residents to actively contribute to climate protection. A tree in the garden, on company or club premises is not only beautiful, but a tree also provides shade, oxygen, air conditioning, air filter, noise reducer and habitat. Together we can create a greener and more liveable Offenbach!"
With the funding guideline, the city will pay up to 1,000 euros per tree for the planting of a new native deciduous tree or yew after approval by the city council. Funding of up to 2,000 euros per tree is available for projects to maintain old trees - such as pruning, safety or health measures.
Environmental protection without burdening the municipal budget
The funding is financed entirely from compensation payments received by the Office for the Environment and Climate as part of the green protection statutes. Compensation payments are made, for example, if no replacement can be planted when a tree has to be felled. No additional funds from the municipal budget are required to finance the funding from the compensation payments.
Helping to shape Offenbach's future: Funding also for non-profit associations
In addition to private individuals and companies, other stakeholders can also benefit from the funding. Non-profit organizations and associations are encouraged to use the grants to plant trees on their properties or to maintain and preserve existing old trees. "In addition to the ecological aspects, a commitment to the environment also strengthens our bond with it. By working with plants, you gain a better understanding of nature and contribute to a greener future," says Groß.
Mayor Groß therefore invites all Offenbach residents and interested institutions to benefit from the support program.

How the application process works
An application for funding must be submitted before the measure begins. This must include an offer from a tree nursery and a site plan with the tree location marked. Further conditions must be observed for the funding of a maintenance measure for old trees. This and other detailed information on the funding requirements and the application process can be found on the municipal website. If you have any questions, the Environment Agency team will be happy to help.
