Neighborhood project "Birkenplätzchen" and IGS Schillerschule receive award
10.07.2023 – With the Climate and Environmental Protection Award 2022, the city of Offenbach recognizes the commitment of exemplary projects in the areas of climate and environmental protection. On June 29, the prize was awarded in the two categories "Environmental Protection: Nature, Water, Soil" and "Climate Protection and Climate Adaptation". The winners were selected by the Commission for Environmental Protection. In the "Climate protection and climate adaptation" category, the "Birkenplätzchen" neighborhood project won the award and the prize money of 1,000 euros with its "Birkenplätzchen park" project. In the category "Environmental protection: nature, water, soil", the IGS Schillerschule won with the project "Promotion of urban biodiversity and environmental awareness in the Nordend district with the help of practice-oriented lessons by pupils of the Schillerschule".
"Our aim with the Climate and Environmental Protection Award is to honor existing as well as planned and often voluntary projects in the areas of climate and environmental protection and also to support them financially," says Mayor and Climate Officer Sabine Groß. "The award gives recognition and attention to exemplary projects and encourages imitation."
The award winners presented their projects during the event at the Ostpol. In category 1 "Climate protection and climate adaptation", the "Birkenplätzchen" neighborhood project ensured, among other things, that lime trees, a mirabelle plum tree and currant bushes were planted at Birkenplätzchen. In addition, a lawn was transformed into an insect meadow to promote biodiversity. Two benches have been installed in the area, inviting visitors to linger and observe. An insect hotel and public WLAN are planned for the future.
In category 2 "Environmental protection: nature, water, soil", the IGS Schillerschule has introduced the compulsory elective subject "Garden" for 7th and 8th graders. Since April 2022, a 200 square meter area in front of the gymnasium has been prepared with the help of an excavator and then planted with native and insect-friendly perennials, shrubs and trees. Through the school's commitment, pupils learn the importance of biodiversity and are involved in practical nature conservation.
Guest speaker Dr. Deike Lüdtke from the Institute for Social-Ecological Research in Frankfurt (ISOE) spoke on the topic of "Conflicts over the forest of the future". She vividly explained the ecosystem services that intact forests provide. They produce oxygen, store carbon, filter water and form the basis for biodiversity, while at the same time providing wood, securing jobs and being used for recreation and leisure. Our forests are suffering greatly from climate change and their preservation requires open dialog, mutual understanding and the joint implementation of locally adapted strategies.
