City of Offenbach

Water & Soil

Water and soil are the natural basis of life for humans, animals and plants. The numerous bodies of water in the city of Offenbach represent a valuable ecological asset and are also popular destinations for local recreation. The task of the Lower Water and Soil Protection Authority in the Office for the Environment, Energy and Climate Protection is therefore to preserve and restore the natural functions of surface waters, groundwater and soil and to regulate their management. Further information can be found on the following pages. If you have any questions about water and soil protection, you can reach us using the contact details provided.

A near-natural stream, a renaturalized floodplain or a near-natural ditch offer a good opportunity for recreation in addition to the habitat function. The aim is to achieve and maintain water body functions and a good condition of the groundwater and surface waters. This is achieved, for example, through water maintenance measures or renaturation.

Groundwater is underground water that is in direct contact with the soil or subsoil. The targeted infiltration of precipitation water constitutes the use of groundwater. A permit from the lower water authority is required for this. The construction of wells or the operation of geothermal probes are also uses of groundwater that require notification or permission.

Soil is the uppermost living part of the earth's crust. Earth or soil is also used synonymously. Soils are very different - for example wet or dry, sandy or loamy, rich or poor in humus. Of particular importance and therefore especially worthy of protection are the top two meters, which are necessary for the formation of a rootable soil layer. Due to its many functions, soil is a resource that requires special protection.
