City of Offenbach

Preparations for the launch of stationary car sharing underway

17.07.2024

The transition to sustainable mobility is in full swing and car sharing plays a central role in this. The shared use of vehicles ensures that urban traffic can be organized more efficiently. In the coming days, the Office for Mobility will therefore be carrying out marking and signage measures at various parking spaces in the city. The work is in preparation for the soon-to-be-launched car sharing service in Offenbach's public spaces. The total of 30 parking spaces are spread across the entire city. One focus is on the central districts close to the city center. In an award procedure, two car-sharing companies, "book-n-drive" and Stadtmobil Rhein-Main, have shown interest in using these parking spaces. Once the contracts have been signed, the companies will be able to make their vehicles available for hire as part of a special use. Mayor and Head of the Environment Department Sabine Groß is delighted with Offenbach's upcoming car sharing service: "Car sharing offers city residents a flexible, inexpensive and environmentally friendly alternative to owning their own car and thus makes a valuable contribution to sustainable urban development."

Just as with the seating of an outdoor restaurant, a corresponding house right then applies to these parking spaces. In this case, this means that only vehicles belonging to car-sharing companies may be parked there. If other vehicles are parked there, they will be towed away. The areas in question are marked with the words "Carsharing" and a large sign with a towing notice.

Background information

In car sharing, individuals do not own the car themselves, but share it with others. The owner of the car is usually a car sharing company with which the customers register in order to be able to book the provider's vehicles themselves. Registration for the actual journey takes place at short notice via the Internet, a smartphone app or the provider's switchboard. On site, the vehicle is opened with a chip card or cell phone and the journey can begin.
